BACKGROUND

Amethyst, the purple variety of Quartz, is one of the most popular gemstones. Amethyst derives its name from the Greek word meaning “not drunken”.

THE LORE

The ancient Greeks believed an amulet of Amethyst would ward off drunkenness and protect soldiers in battles. Wearing the gemstone showed loyalty and spirituality.

METHOD OF ENHANCEMENT

Amethyst can be enhanced with heat (878 - 1382 degrees F). Very dark saturated gemstones are also heated to lighten the Amethyst.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Most specimens found in today’s market are natural or synthetic. Synthetic Amethyst is a man made material with essentially the same chemical composition and structure as natural Amethyst. Detecting synthetic Amethyst is usually beyond the talent of the everyday jeweler and requires a polariscope.

Amethyst is popular in all colors. However, the most expensive specimens have vivid saturation (dark purple) and red overtones in the stones. Fine Amethyst should not have any eye visible inclusions and be well cut.
