BACKGROUND

The Garnet mineral group is composed of different colored minerals with related chemical composition and similar crystal structures. Garnets come in nearly every color and transparencies. Some varieties are translucent to opaque.

The most popular varieties are found in the red hues and are generally affordable. Garnets are generally not enhanced and have been popular for thousands of years.

THE LORE

The Roman scholar, “Pliny the Elder”, wrote that red garnets would cure inflammations and stop bleeding. The Greeks named the purplish-red variety “Rhodon” (rose or lithos stone). Some ancient cultures believed that amulets of red garnets could prevent wars, and the gemstone represented faith.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All the red varieties of garnets are very popular. Garnet derives its name from “Granatus” (Latin), meaning seed like crystal structure. Most people believe incorrectly that all garnets are inexpensive. However, Demantoid and Tsavorite garnets (neither variety is red) are quite expensive. Both of these varieties can demand thousands of dollars per carat for fine specimens. Rhodolite Garnet is a mixture of almandite and pyrope garnet and is quite beautiful. All garnets are durable and make excellent gifts.

All the red garnets are popular and modestly priced. Purchase gems with good saturation, that aren’t too dark, and still have transparency. All garnets should be well cut and have no visible inclusion using the un-aided eye.
